The European Space Resources Innovation Centre in Luxembourg was established in August 2020 by the Luxembourg Space Agency (LSA) and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) as a national innovation centre in the field of space resources. The European Space Agency (ESA) joined ESRIC in November 2020 as a strategic partner.
The creation of ESRIC follows a Memorandum of Cooperation in the field of space resources that was signed between ESA and the Government of Luxembourg in November 2019. It is part of the SpaceResources.lu initiative launched by the Government of in 2016 with the aim to create a favourable ecosystem for the development of activities related to the exploration and use of space resources.
Other partners with a strong interest in this field, may join ESRIC in the near future to develop new ideas and projects.
Research Partnerships
ESRIC seeks to establish, develop and strengthen its role on an international level through identifying and facilitating strategic partnerships with European and international players for both established companies and startups. This extends to the valorisation of the research and technologies developed in the centre.
Having a clear commercial focus is key. The goal is to create added value for future space resources related markets and bring together parties from the space and non-space sectors. Technologies that exist today on earth can often be deployed in space.
Space resources challenges are often similar to problems that we are trying to solve here on Earth. There is a lot that we can learn in both space and non-space sectors, applying the most innovative technical solutions to address similar challenges both on Earth and in space.
ESRIC will reach out to industry and investors to establish partnerships to accelerate the development of crucial technologies for Earth, but also enable them to be used in space resources activities.
Support will also be available for technology transfer and the commercialisation process of the knowledge and technology developed. In particular with regards to IP valorisation and protection, licensing and entrepreneurship initiatives.
